Background
Hand in Hand South Africa, based in Johannesburg, began operations in July 2008. We had initiated the Jobs for Growth Programme in 2006, under which more than 1,000 beneficiaries, trainers and government officials were trained, and Hand in Hand SA emerged from this. Percy Barnevik is a member of the Advisory Council to the President of South Africa and the South African government supports Hand in Hand here.
Besides the Jobs for Growth Programme, other private partners here have expressed keen interest in our model. The Impala Bafokeng Trust has signed an agreement to implement a multi-million rand project in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in North West Province. This will see the creation of at least 50,000 jobs in five years. The project is being piloted in the Rustenburg Local Municipality. The self-help group model is also being implemented in Free State Province by Mangaung University Community Partnership Programme (MUCPP), which has formed over 100 self-help groups with support from the local municipality and Hand in Hand India. The organisation also supports self-help group programmes of community-based organisations in other provinces.
